Bespoke lingerie as a gift: how the process works

Bespoke lingerie is a considered gift, but it raises an obvious practical question: how do you commission a piece made to someone else's measurements without either asking them directly or guessing? There are two approaches that work well.
The gift consultation
The most straightforward approach is to give the recipient a gift consultation appointment rather than a finished piece. The person giving the gift pays for the commission upfront; the recipient comes to the atelier for their own measurement appointment and chooses their own fabric and silhouette. The finished piece is then made to their exact measurements.
This approach works particularly well when the recipient has specific preferences about fabric or style that the giver may not know. It also removes any awkwardness around measurements, since the recipient is involved from the beginning.
Commissioning from measurements
If the gift is meant to be a surprise, it is possible to commission a piece from measurements provided by the giver. This works best when the giver has access to a well-fitting garment belonging to the recipient. A bra that fits correctly, for example. From which we can take reference measurements.
The toile fitting in this case is done on a dress form adjusted to the provided measurements, and the finished piece is made to those dimensions. There is always some risk of a fit issue when the recipient has not been measured directly, and we say so plainly at the time of booking.
Packaging and presentation
Gift commissions are packaged in a rigid box with tissue and a handwritten care card. A note from the giver can be included. The box can be collected from the atelier or dispatched by tracked courier to any address in Japan or internationally.
Gift commissions follow the same timeline as standard commissions. If you have a specific date in mind, the contact form is the right place to start the conversation early.
