How to take accurate measurements for bespoke lingerie

Measurements for bespoke lingerie are more specific than measurements for clothing. A dress can accommodate a centimetre of error at the waist. A bra cannot. This guide covers the twelve measurements used at Stardust Jump and explains why each one matters.

The measurements that are often missed

Most people know their underbust and full bust measurements. Fewer know their bust point spacing. The distance between the two nipple points. Which determines where the cups are positioned on the bra band. If this measurement is off, the cups will sit too close together or too far apart, and no amount of strap adjustment will fix it.

Similarly, the high hip measurement. Taken about 7 centimetres below the natural waist. Is more relevant for brief construction than the full hip, which is taken at the widest point. Both are needed, but the high hip is the one that determines where the waistband sits.

How to take measurements accurately

  • Use a soft tape measure, not a rigid one.
  • Measure over bare skin or very thin fabric. Not over a padded bra.
  • Stand naturally, not at attention. Posture affects every measurement.
  • Have someone else take the measurements if possible, particularly for the back measurements.
  • Take each measurement twice and use the average if the two readings differ.
  • Note any asymmetry. One shoulder higher, one hip slightly wider. Rather than averaging it away.

When to use a professional tailor

For remote commissions, we recommend having the measurements taken by a professional tailor. Most tailors in Japan are familiar with body measurements for garment construction, though they may not have taken lingerie-specific measurements before. The measurement guide sent with the fabric sample pack includes a page that can be given to the tailor explaining exactly what is needed.

The cost of a professional measurement appointment is small relative to the cost of a commission, and it significantly reduces the likelihood of a fit issue at the toile stage.

If you are preparing for a remote commission and have questions about the measurement process, the FAQ section has more detail. The contact form is the right place to start a conversation.
